How Bamboo Rugs Are Made

To harvest the bamboo, local workers use a sharp blade similar to a sickle, and walk around the stalk and chip away at the ends until it falls down. The bamboo is then transported to a facility still within the mountains to be cut to proper dimensions. From there, the stalks are cut from one solid piece into large slats using a uniquely shaped saw, almost like a really sharp apple slicer, and then fed through another machine that sizes down the slats further. The sawdust that's left over from this process is used for heating/boiling the slats to make them more pliable. The pieces are then run through a series of machines that attach them and sew them together before the soft backing and decorative cloth border are hand-sewn on. They're then packaged up and shipped to distribution centers in the states where they wait for you to purchase a beautiful new bamboo rug for your home!

The Anji Mountain People

Knowing who made your bamboo rugs is just as important as knowing how they're made. The people of the Anji Mountains actually live a very different lifestyle than the rest of stereotypical China. They are over 3 hours removed from the hustle and bustle of cities like Shanghai and are surrounded by towering plants and mountains versus massive sky scrapers and crowded streets.

Where Do Bamboo Rugs Come From

Have you ever wondered where the bamboo used in bamboo rugs comes from? Our bamboo rugs have their origins in the Anji region of Zhejiang province, China. Bamboo rug origins are home to some of the most plentiful bamboo groves on the planet. Bamboo is central to the economy there, providing the materials for making furniture, textiles, art pieces, and construction materials as well as providing a beautiful and serene location for sightseeing. Products made from the bamboo include bamboo rugs, bamboo flooring, bamboo mats, furniture, and more. Bamboo rugs and other products from the Anji region are sold around the world and account for a large portion of the Chinese bamboo industry’s total income.

Features Of Bamboo Rugs

There are many important features to look for in your bamboo rug. First, it should be soft and slightly flexible to account for carpeted, tile, wood or other finished floors. The bottom should also accommodate floors, meaning it should have a soft, but rubbery backing to make sure the bamboo area rugs stay in place without scratching or damaging the floor below.
